The challenge of autonomy in off-grid environments
Using embedded systems like cRIO or sbRIO in off-grid conditions presents a major challenge: constant power consumption. Without a native sleep mode, these systems can draw up to 200 mA even when idle. It becomes essential to implement a smart device capable of controlling the power supply dynamically.
NeoRTC – A simple, efficient, and ultra-low-power solution
NeoRTC acts as an autonomous power controller: it cuts power when the system is idle and restores it at a scheduled time using its high-precision real-time clock (5 ppm).
When powered off, the system consumes only 1 µA. That’s 200,000 times less than when active. This dramatically increases battery life without compromising system reliability.
Smart operation powered by a real-time clock
At initial startup, NeoRTC records the current time using its built-in RTC (Real-Time Clock). A “wake-up” date is then scheduled. The RIO system can authorize NeoRTC to disconnect power.
At the programmed time, NeoRTC automatically restores power, the system reboots, resumes operations, syncs the clock, and sets the next sleep cycle.
Everything is fully automated and programmable.
